What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which men breast tissue swell and create male breasts. Gynecomastia is very common among middle-aged men and boys during puberty. Since men are born with very little breast tissue, male breasts won’t develop into female breasts, however it is a very frustrating experience for many young and mature men.
For a man, enlarged breasts can be stressful and embarrassing. Some studies suggest male breasts can cause anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, eating disorder, even suicidal thoughts in affected men.
Gynecomastia can be difficult to hide and a challenge to romantic relationships. It can make activities such as swimming or changing in the locker room traumatic.
Since it is a very serious topic for many readers I decided to cover it in my blog and to give you advice about gynecomastia and treatment methods. You will find here natural ways to get rid of male breasts and enjoy life once again.
Why Does It Happen?
Gynecomastia is often caused by an imbalance in hormones – a decrease in testosterone (male hormone) and an increase in estrogen (female hormone).
Testosterone – known also as male sex hormone – is the most important hormone in our bodies. It is responsible for all male features such as strength, muscle mass, energy, facial and body hair, sexual desire and a healthy erection. In short testosterone makes us as men. As boys grow up and go through puberty, testosterone drives their sexual growth.
Most people think of estrogen as an exclusively female hormone, but men also produce it — though normally in small quantities. However, male estrogen levels that are too high or are out of balance with testosterone levels can cause gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia is a very popular condition – about 50% of adolescent boys and as many as 66% of men over 50 will experience gynecomastia!
Male breasts can be also caused by several health conditions that affect normal balance of hormones. These include:
aging – hormone changes that occur with normal aging can cause gynecomastia, especially in men who are overweight.
Injury or diseases of the male sex organs (testes) can result in decreased testosterone production and relatively high estrogen levels, leading to gynecomastia
- thyroid problems
- certain cancers including lung tumor, pituitary and adrenal glands
- obesity (more estrogen, less testosterone)
- medications for heart disease, cancer, AIDS, HIV, depression, ulcers
- illegal drugs (anabolic steroids, marijuana, heroin) and alcohol
- kidney or liver diseases
- malnutrition or starvation – in a body deprived of adequate nutrition, testosterone levels drop, but estrogen levels remain constant, causing a hormonal imbalance.
Symptoms And Diagnosis
The first sign of gynecomastia may be a lump of fatty tissue under your nipple. Sometimes you may feel the lump is tender or sore. This growth is usually symmetrical, however swelling can happen unevenly, with one breast being larger than the other.
If you see this changes in your body you may be worried it’s a breast cancer. However, there is no need to freak out – male breast cancer occurs in very small numbers – only about 1% of overall cases of breast cancers. Although it’s probably gynecomastia I suggest you still see your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
If your doctor suspects you have gynecomastia, he will probably check you have no hard lumps, oozing fluid, or skin problems that could be signs of cancer. He will also try to rule out fatty breast tissue called the false gynecomastia (pseudogynecomastia), and it isn’t the same as gynecomastia.
Your doctor may ask some questions about your medical history such as kidney or liver problems or use of prescription and illegal drugs.
If necessary the physician may also run some tests for gynecomastia:
- blood or urine samples – to check your hormone levels
- mammogram (X-ray of your breasts) or biopsy (take sample of your breast tissue)
If you are diagnosed with gynecomastia there are few potential scenarios of treatment the doctor can prescribe
- let your body get better without treatment (sometimes it cures by itself but usually takes a long time)
- if your testosterone level is too low, doctors may suggest testosterone replacement therapy (known as TRT) to bring the hormones in balance. TRT basically means injecting synthetic testosterone into your body and has many potential and dangerous side effects such as heart attack, stroke, prostatic hyperplasia, prostate growth, sleep apnea, acne, and blood clot formation
- in certain cases, the doctor may want to do a surgery to take out extra breast fat (known as liposuction) remove the breast gland tissue altogether (known as mastectomy).
Natural Gynecomastia Treatment
Fortunately, there are safe and natural ways of treating gynecomastia.

The reality is you can’t burn body fat in selected spots and need to reduce your overall body fat to see less fat around your chest (one reason for male breasts). So the good old-fashioned strategies of fat loss apply: you need to eat fewer calories than the amount of calories your body burns in order to lose fat and your man boobs.
a) Get Stronger
- right exercises – muscle size is directly related to strength gains and so by getting stronger on bench press you will shape and grow your chest
- right weight – the more weight you work out with, the more calories you burn in a workout. Also, the heavier you lift the more testosterone your body produces
- right posture – sitting behind your desk all day tightens your chest muscles and cause slouching shoulders – yes it makes your male breasts look worse. Get used to sitting and walking with your shoulders back instead of letting them slouch all the time. Workout also improves your body posture. b) Eat Healthier
Eating junk food over years (poor quality calories in high quantities) contribute to male breasts. This doesn’t mean you have to stop eating junk food forever, but you will have to eat a lot healthier most of the time to see your body fat go down.
Eat more meats, chicken, fish, veggies and fruits. Drink less alcohol and soda. A couple of beers and a burger when out with friends is fine, but a beer 6 pack and TV dinner every single day is an obvious no-go.
Putting it all together
Gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) often happens due to an imbalance in testosterone and estrogen in your body and it’s a very common condition for men between 40 and 50.
Gynecomastia is most of the time not dangerous but can be stressful and embarrassing.
You can treat gynecomastia with two very invasive and potentially dangerous therapies: testosterone replacement therapy (known as TRT) or surgery. Alternatively you can choose a safer and more natural way such as natural testosterone boosters, weight lifting workout, and lean diet.
